In 1867, as Garibaldi's forces move toward Rome, Monsignor Colombo da Priverno, a weary judge on the Papal court, becomes involved in the fate of three young rebels arrested after a bombing. When Colombo discovers that one of them is the son he never knew he had, he risks his position and his own freedom to protect him. Set during the final years of Papal temporal rule, Luigi Magni's film blends political history, drama and darkly comic observations of power, justice and faith.
