Dark comedy is the art of finding something funny in situations that should not be funny — death, failure, poverty, family dysfunction, political collapse. The best dark comedies use laughter not as an escape from discomfort but as a way of going deeper into it.

Some are outright absurdist farces, some are genre films that gradually reveal their comic core, and some are character studies where the humour is inseparable from the sadness. Félix, disguised as Father Christmas, hands out leaflets advertising a sexy Christmas party. His place is taken by an African Santa Claus and he returns to his caravan only to find his girlfriend Josette about to leave him.

Best for: When you want hilarious and painfully accurate Argentine family comedy.
4. Andy Warhol’s Bad (1977)

Ever-bumbling Nino is an illegal Italian immigrant working in a Swiss hotel. Waiting on the wealthy, he feels as if he’s carved out his own place in paradise.
When he loses his job after being arrested for urinating in public, Nino is desperate to stay in the country. He goes into hi ding, ends up living in a chicken shack and eventually decides to dye his hair blonde and pass himself off as a German. However, Nino grows to have doubts about hiding his heritage and identity.
Best for: When you want sharp Italian comedy about an immigrant’s humiliations in Switzerland.
7. 101 Reykjavík (2000)
Best for: When you want Icelandic dark comedy about a man-child and his mother’s unexpected girlfriend.
8. Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) AKA Dogme #6
Best for: When you want Harmony Korine’s most extreme and unsettling family portrait.
9. On the Run (1999)
Best for: When you want a darkly comic French road movie full of wrong turns and bad decisions.
10. Le prestige de la mort (2006)
Best for: When you want a French black comedy in which death itself becomes absurdly negotiable.
11. Festen (1998) AKA The Celebration (Dogme #1)
When a father turns 60, his large family gathers at a castle to celebrate him. Everybody likes and respects him deeply–or do they?
The youngest son is trying to live up to his father’s expectations; he runs a grill-bar in a dirty part of Copenhagen. The oldest son runs a restaurant in France; the sister is an anthropologist.
Best for: When you want a family reunion that turns into something far darker and far funnier than expected.
12. Parasite (2019) 기생충

13. Delicatessen (1991)
Centered on a post-apocalyptic society where food is scarce and used as currency. In an apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor.
The owner of the eatery also owns the apartment building and is in need of a new maintenance man since the prior one “mysteriously” disappeared. A former clown applies for the job and the butcher’s intent is to have him work for as little as possible.
Best for: When you want post-apocalyptic French dark comedy that is as visually inventive as it is funny.
14. Druk (2020) AKA Another Round
There is a theory that man is born with half a per mille too little, that alcohol in the blood opens the mind to the outside world, problems seem smaller, and creativity increases. We know it well: after the first glass of wine, the conversation lifts, the possibilities open up.
Martin (Mads Mikkelsen) is a high-school teacher who feels old and tired. His students and their parents want him terminated to increase their average.
Best for: When you want Danish dark comedy about four teachers testing whether more alcohol makes life better.
15. Ikinai (1998) AKA Suicide Bus
Best for: When you want a blackly comic Japanese film where passengers form a suicide club on a bus.
