Marcello Clerici is a young Italian man who has spent much of his life trying to escape the feeling that he is different from everyone around him. In Fascist Italy, he finds what he believes will be security and acceptance by joining the Fascist Party and marrying Giulia, a conventional young woman from a respectable family. His desire to appear normal gradually becomes inseparable from his willingness to conform to the political order surrounding him.

Marcello is assigned to travel to Paris with his wife and secretly assist in the assassination of his former university professor, Professor Quadri, an outspoken anti-Fascist living in exile. As Marcello becomes involved in the operation, memories of his childhood and the experiences that shaped his obsession with conformity begin to emerge, revealing how deeply fear and guilt have influenced his choices.

Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist is both a political drama and a psychological portrait of a man attempting to bury his individuality beneath conformity. Its striking visual composition, designed by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, turns architecture, light, shadow, and interiors into expressions of Marcello’s psychological state, making the film one of the defining works of 1970s European cinema.
