In the final, desperate years of Japanese colonial rule over Taiwan, two tenant-farmer brothers scrape by feeding their many children, a deaf mother, and a mentally ill sister, all while dodging conscription and losing their farmland to their landlord. When an unexploded American bomb lands in their field, they see it not as a danger but as a gift from heavenβa shot at reward money from the colonial authorities. Note: this is the first film in director Wang Toon's celebrated 'Taiwan Trilogy,' followed by Banana Paradise (1989) and Hill of No Return (1992), and was shot in Yilan's Shuanglian Pond, with its visual style drawing on the watercolor paintings of Taiwanese artist Lan Yin-Ting.
