After unearthing an ancient bas-relief sculpture of a mysterious woman known as the 'Gradiva,' a young archaeologist in Pompeii becomes consumed by visions of the figure, torn between the sculpture's haunting image and a real woman who seems to mirror it exactly. Based on the 1903 novella that famously drew the interest of Sigmund Freud, who wrote an entire psychoanalytic essay on it.
