As the Chinese Civil War ends in 1949, an elderly grandmother flees to Taiwan with her general son-in-law's family, leaving behind almost everything—except an old Qi Baishi painting of persimmons she cherishes above all else. In their new, cramped life raising twelve grandchildren amid poverty, her endless resourcefulness turns hardship into warmth and humor. Note: this is a deeply autobiographical film for director Wang Toon, whose own father was a Kuomintang general, and the same director behind Strawman (1987), the first film in his celebrated 'Taiwan Trilogy.'
