Le quattro giornate di Napoli (1962) AKA The Four Days of Naples

In September 1943, as word spreads that Italy has signed an armistice with the Allies, the people of Naples celebrate what they believe is the end of the war—only to find the Nazis tightening their brutal grip on the city instead. Armed with little more than improvised weapons and desperation, ordinary citizens rise up in a spontaneous four-day uprising that drives the Germans out before Allied troops even arrive. Note: shot in a quasi-documentary style with a large ensemble cast (including a young Gian Maria Volonté), the film received two Academy Award nominations—Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay—and opened the 1963 Locarno Film Festival.
