In 1934 Sicily, a minor municipal clerk is reluctantly pressured into joining the Fascist Party just to keep his job. As the years pass and the war brings devastation to his family, he can only mutter quiet dissent behind closed doors—even as his own son is sent to fight, and ultimately killed, in a conflict he never believed in. Note: adapted from Vitaliano Brancati's short story 'Il vecchio con gli stivali,' the film's unflinching portrait of ordinary Italians' complicity with Fascism proved so controversial on release that it was debated on the floor of the Italian Parliament. Its 1950 U.S. release featured narration written by playwright Arthur Miller and read by actor John Garfield.
