Cathy leaves her overcrowded family home in search of a better future in London, where she meets Reg, a cheerful lorry driver. The two fall in love, marry, and begin building what appears to be a stable working-class life together. Their happiness quickly unravels after Reg suffers an injury at work and loses his job. Unable to keep up with rent payments, the family is forced into increasingly desperate living conditions as landlords refuse to accept tenants with children.
As Cathy and Reg move from one temporary shelter to another—including overcrowded hostels, a caravan, and abandoned buildings—they become trapped inside a welfare system that treats homelessness as a bureaucratic problem instead of a human one. Every attempt to keep the family together is met with new rules, paperwork, and eviction notices until social services intervene in the most devastating way possible.
Rather than offering melodrama or easy solutions, Cathy Come Home exposes how ordinary people can lose everything through circumstances beyond their control. More than half a century later, its portrayal of homelessness, unemployment, and institutional failure remains painfully relevant.
