Joy, a young working-class woman living in London, struggles to build a stable life while trapped in poverty and an unhappy marriage. Her husband Tom is a violent criminal who spends much of his time in prison, leaving Joy to raise their young son, Jonny, largely on her own. Seeking escape from her difficult circumstances, she begins a relationship with Dave, one of Tom’s criminal associates, and briefly experiences the affection and freedom missing from her marriage.
Joy’s hopes for a better life are repeatedly undermined by poverty, crime, and the limited choices available to her. When Dave is imprisoned, Joy is once again left alone with her child, forced to confront the reality of her situation and decide what kind of future she wants for herself and Jonny.
Directed by Ken Loach in his feature-film debut, Poor Cow combines social realism with Joy’s personal reflections on love, family, and freedom. Rather than portraying her simply as a victim, the film gives her an independent voice and captures the frustrations and small moments of happiness of a woman trying to find dignity in a difficult world.
