The Old Oak (2023)

TJ Ballantyne is hanging on by his fingertips to The Old Oak, the last surviving pub in a former County Durham mining village where thirty years of decline have left shops boarded up and hope in short supply. When a group of Syrian refugees are relocated into the village’s cheap, empty houses without warning, long-simmering resentment among the locals boils over, and the pub itself becomes contested ground in the growing rift.

TJ finds an unlikely friend in Yara, a young Syrian refugee whose camera becomes her way of documenting a new life that keeps threatening to fall apart around her. As TJ tries to use what’s left of the pub’s back room to bring the old mining community and the new arrivals together rather than tear them further apart, he risks losing what little he has left—including the regulars who’ve been the only constant in his life for decades.

Ken Loach’s The Old Oak is the third in an unofficial trilogy set in Northeast England, following I, Daniel Blake and Sorry We Missed You, and was, at the time, expected by Loach himself to be his final feature at age 87. True to form, the film mostly casts non-professional actors from the region, refusing any easy sentimentality as it searches for a thread of solidarity between two communities that have both, in different ways, been left behind.
