Ricky Turner, still fighting debt left over from the 2008 financial crash, sees a way out when he’s offered the chance to become a self-employed delivery driver—buying his own van and working as an “independent contractor” who is, in practice, controlled down to the minute by a handheld scanner and punishing delivery quotas. To afford the van, the family sells the car his wife Abbie relies on for her job as a home care nurse, forcing her onto public transport and stretching her already grueling, emotionally demanding rounds even further.
As Ricky’s hours balloon and Abbie’s shifts pile on top of them, the family has less and less time for each other or for their teenage son Seb, who is drifting toward trouble at school, and their younger daughter Liza Jane, who quietly absorbs the strain building around her. What begins as a shot at independence and stability instead pulls the family apart piece by piece, as the “flexibility” of gig work reveals itself to be a system with all the risk pushed onto the worker and none of the safety net of traditional employment.
Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You reunites him with screenwriter Paul Laverty and much of the team behind I, Daniel Blake, turning its unsparing gaze on the modern gig economy and the false promise of “being your own boss.” Premiering in competition at Cannes, the film builds toward one of Loach’s bleakest endings, refusing any tidy resolution to a system built to grind ordinary families down.
