Daniel Blake, a 59-year-old widowed carpenter in Newcastle, is declared unfit to work after suffering a heart attack—yet the state’s welfare bureaucracy still deems him “fit for work” and denies his benefits, trapping him in an absurd, Kafkaesque loop of appeals, forms, and phone hold music, made worse by his complete unfamiliarity with computers in an increasingly online-only system. Refusing to simply give up and vanish into the cracks, Daniel channels his stubborn dignity into a very public act of protest, spray-painting his demands directly on the wall of the job center.

Along the way, he befriends Katie, a young single mother relocated from London to Newcastle and similarly failed by the same system, struggling to feed her two children and keep a roof over their heads. As Daniel and Katie lean on each other through eviction threats, food bank visits, and one especially devastating moment of hunger and shame, their friendship becomes the one thing standing between them and total abandonment by the institutions meant to help them.

Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake won the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival—his second, after The Wind That Shakes the Barley—along with the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film. Made when Loach was 80 and had considered retirement, the film became a genuine cultural flashpoint in Britain, credited with reigniting public debate over welfare sanctions and food bank use under UK austerity policy.
