An honest engraver named Anargyros Loumbardopoulos is persuaded to make a counterfeit British gold sovereign, despite his initial refusal to become involved in anything dishonest. Once the coin enters circulation, it passes through the hands of a series of very different people, becoming the connecting thread between several stories of love, greed, poverty, deception, and sacrifice.
The counterfeit coin moves from one person to another, revealing the hopes, weaknesses, and contradictions of those who possess it. Each encounter presents a different side of human nature, from the desperation of the poor to the selfishness of the wealthy and the devotion of people willing to make sacrifices for those they love.
