In 1750s Yorkshire, Tolly, a young boy living in a remote village, becomes caught up in the strange and dangerous world of Black Jack, a mysterious Frenchman who has escaped from an asylum. After Tolly’s grandfather dies, he is sent to work for a local mill owner, where he encounters Black Jack and becomes involved in a series of adventures that take him far beyond the familiar world of his village.
When Black Jack takes Tolly and a young girl named Belle on the road, the three encounter violence, exploitation, and the harsh realities of 18th-century society. Their journey exposes Tolly to a world shaped by poverty, superstition, social inequality, and the growing forces of industrialization.
Ken Loach’s Black Jack is an atmospheric historical adventure that combines childhood, social injustice, and dark humor with a vivid depiction of rural Yorkshire. Based on Leon Garfield’s novel, the film explores the loss of innocence and the struggle for freedom while presenting a fascinating portrait of a society undergoing profound change.
