Raining Stones (1993)

Bob Williams is unemployed and living in working-class Manchester, scraping together money through whatever odd jobs and half-legal schemes come his way—from rustling a sheep to sell as mutton, to unclogging the foul drains of the local Catholic church for free. When his van is stolen, his difficulties deepen just as his young daughter Coleen’s First Communion approaches, and Bob becomes fixated on buying her a proper white communion dress, whatever the cost.

As Bob’s odd jobs fail one after another, his stubborn pride pushes him toward increasingly risky choices, including borrowing from a loan shark with a violent reputation. Alongside his friend Tommy, who is equally broke and equally resourceful, Bob navigates a string of small humiliations and comic misadventures that mask a much harder truth about unemployment and dignity in Thatcher-era Britain.

Ken Loach’s Raining Stones blends sharp working-class comedy with real desperation, following a similar path to his earlier Riff-Raff but zeroing in on one father’s stubborn love for his daughter. Shot with the same naturalistic, unsentimental eye Loach is known for, the film finds both humor and heartbreak in the daily grind of just getting by, and won the Jury Prize at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.
