Maggie Conlan is a fiercely protective but volatile single mother, already scarred by a childhood of abuse and years of violent relationships that cost her custody of her four children by four different men. When she meets Jorge, a gentle Latin American refugee who offers her the first non-abusive relationship she’s ever known, she finally begins to see a path toward stability and happiness.
But Maggie’s turbulent history follows her into this new life. As she and Jorge start a family of their own, social services—wary of her past and quick to intervene on the slightest incident—grow increasingly determined to remove her newborn children from her care as well, trapping the couple in an escalating, seemingly unwinnable battle against a bureaucracy that refuses to see her as anything other than her past.
Ken Loach’s Ladybird Ladybird is a raw, unflinching drama based on a true story, refusing to sanitize or soften its portrait of a woman failed again and again by both the men in her life and the institutions meant to protect her. Anchored by a searing, largely improvised performance from newcomer Crissy Rock, the film builds an almost unbearable emotional intensity as it asks who gets to be trusted with their own children, and who decides.
