Carla’s Song (1996)

George Lennox, a headstrong Glasgow bus driver, develops a fascination with Carla, a Nicaraguan passenger who often can’t afford her fare. When George lets her ride for free, his growing insubordination costs him his job—but by then he’s already discovered that Carla is far more troubled than he first realized. Scarred both physically and emotionally, suicidal, and haunted by the disappearance of her boyfriend Antonio, a Sandinista believed to have been kidnapped by the U.S.-backed Contras, Carla can’t move forward until she confronts what happened to the people she left behind.

Determined to help her heal, George follows Carla back to Nicaragua, throwing his apolitical, easygoing nature straight into a country still gripped by the aftermath of civil war. There, the pair fall in with Bradley, a disillusioned former CIA advisor to the Contras who has since turned against the very policies he once served, and who may hold the key to finding Antonio.

Ken Loach’s Carla’s Song is the director’s first collaboration with screenwriter Paul Laverty, who would go on to write nearly every one of Loach’s films for the following three decades. Blending romance with sharp political anger at U.S. intervention in Central America, the film moves from the working-class streets of Glasgow to the war-scarred landscapes of Nicaragua, anchored by Robert Carlyle’s performance as a man radicalized not by ideology, but by love.
