Casim Khan, a second-generation Pakistani-Scottish DJ in Glasgow, dreams of opening his own club while his devout Muslim parents make plans for him to marry his cousin Jasmine, soon to arrive from Pakistan in an arranged match. Those plans collapse the moment he falls for Roisin Hanlon, an Irish Catholic music teacher at his younger sister’s school, pulling Casim into an impossible position between the woman he loves and the family and faith he was raised to honor.
As Casim and Roisin’s relationship deepens, it sets off a collision between two tightly bound communities—his family’s expectations and her Catholic school’s own rigid disapproval of her relationship with a Muslim man—testing both of their identities and forcing painful choices neither had prepared for. Note: the film’s title comes from a Robert Burns poem, “Ae fond kiss, and then we sever,” a fitting echo of the star-crossed romance at its center.
Ken Loach’s Ae Fond Kiss… is the third in an informal trilogy of films the director made in Glasgow’s Strathclyde region with screenwriter Paul Laverty, and one of his most tender and hopeful works. Told with Loach’s usual unsentimental realism but built around a genuinely romantic core, the film won the César Award for Best European Union Film and the Golden Spike at Valladolid, and confronts religious and cultural intolerance without losing sight of the very human love story at its heart.
