Klaus Drittemann is an East German singer who travels to West Germany in search of his father, a celebrated poet who disappeared from his life years earlier. After settling in Hamburg, Klaus becomes involved with a group of musicians and begins a relationship with Emma, a journalist who helps him investigate his father’s mysterious past.
As Klaus searches for answers, he discovers that his father’s disappearance is connected to the political divisions and compromises of postwar Germany. His journey gradually becomes a confrontation with questions of identity, exile, artistic freedom, and the difficult relationship between East and West Germany.
Ken Loach’s Fatherland is a thoughtful political drama about displacement, memory, and the personal consequences of ideological division. Set during the final years of the Cold War, the film examines how political systems can shape individual lives and explores the complicated meaning of belonging when a person is caught between two countries and two versions of history.
