In Northern Ireland during the height of the Troubles, American human rights lawyer Paul Sullivan is killed while investigating allegations of British security force abuses. His girlfriend Ingrid Jessner, a political activist, survives the attack and becomes determined to uncover the truth behind his death.
British investigator Peter Kerr is sent to Belfast to examine the case, but his investigation quickly encounters resistance from the security services and conflicting accounts of what really happened. As Kerr digs deeper, he begins to suspect that Sullivan’s death may be connected to a much larger political conspiracy involving British intelligence and covert operations.
Ken Loach’s Hidden Agenda is a tense political thriller that examines the conflict in Northern Ireland, government secrecy, and the abuse of state power. Drawing on the atmosphere of the Troubles, the film questions how far governments may go to protect sensitive operations and how difficult it can be to uncover the truth when powerful institutions have something to hide.
