Joe Kavanagh is an unemployed, recovering alcoholic in Glasgow, staying sober one day at a time and pouring his restless energy into coaching a hopeless but spirited local football team. His life brightens when he meets Sarah, a health visitor whose stability and warmth offer him a real shot at a different kind of future—one neither of them takes lightly, given the scars both carry from their pasts.
But Joe’s fragile new happiness is threatened when Liam, one of his young footballers, falls into debt with local drug dealers over his partner Sabine’s addiction. Determined to protect the boy, Joe makes a desperate decision to do the gang’s dirty work in exchange for wiping the debt clean—a choice that pulls him back toward the very world of violence and self-destruction he’s fought so hard to leave behind, and threatens to cost him Sarah along with it.
