Set in the Sicilian town of Bagheria, Baarìa follows three generations of the Torrenuova family across much of the 20th century. The story centers on Peppino, a poor but idealistic boy who grows up surrounded by the traditions, characters, and political tensions of his hometown. As he becomes an adult, his involvement in local politics and his commitment to the Communist movement shape both his ambitions and his relationships.
Peppino falls in love with Mannina, and their relationship develops against the backdrop of war, political conflict, poverty, and the changing social landscape of Sicily. Their marriage and family life unfold as Bagheria itself transforms, while Peppino struggles to reconcile his political ideals with the realities of everyday life and the expectations of those around him.
Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, Baarìa is an expansive, semi-autobiographical portrait of Sicilian life that blends family history, romance, comedy, politics, and nostalgia. Rather than focusing on a single historical event, the film uses the fortunes of one family and one town to evoke the dramatic changes Italy experienced throughout the 20th century.
