Nader and Simin are an Iranian couple facing the breakdown of their marriage. Simin wants to leave Iran with their daughter, believing that a better future awaits them elsewhere, while Nader refuses to leave because he wants to care for his elderly father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. When Simin moves out of their home, Nader hires Razieh, a deeply religious woman, to look after his father while he is at work.
A seemingly minor incident between Nader and Razieh soon develops into a serious legal dispute. Razieh claims that Nader caused her to suffer a miscarriage, while Nader insists that he did not know she was pregnant and denies responsibility. As both families become entangled in the case, questions of truth, guilt, responsibility, class, religion, and personal survival become increasingly difficult to separate.
Asghar Farhadi builds the story around conflicting versions of events rather than offering a simple division between right and wrong. What begins as a marital crisis gradually becomes a devastating examination of how ordinary people can become trapped by circumstances, social pressure, and the consequences of decisions that initially seem insignificant.
