During the Great Depression, washed-up boxer James J. The film's portrayal of Braddock's rival, Max Baer, as a reckless brute drew strong objections from Baer's real-life family, who felt it unfairly maligned a man who was, in reality, deeply haunted by having once killed an opponent in the ring.
