Lo imposible (2012) AKA The Impossible

A British family vacationing at a Thai beach resort over Christmas is torn apart when the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami strikes without warning. As mother and eldest son are swept away together, father and two younger sons fight through the wreckage to survive and find their way back to each other. Note: based on the real experience of Spanish survivor María Belón and her family, though the film cast British actors and gave the characters English names—a choice the director made deliberately so the story would feel universal rather than tied to one nationality. The tsunami sequence used real water in a massive studio tank rather than CGI, with Naomi Watts and 14-year-old Tom Holland spending five weeks filming the physically grueling scenes. This was Holland's breakout film role, launching his career several years before he was cast as Spider-Man.
