A cowardly, self-serving hat factory clerk lives under the sheltered watch of his elderly aunt and housekeeper, obsessively logging his daily whereabouts in a notebook to always have an alibi. But his instinct for self-preservation—and a wandering eye for a much younger woman—repeatedly drags him into the very trouble he's desperate to avoid, including a bombing he's wrongly suspected of. Note: directed by Mario Monicelli, a founding figure of Italian-style comedy (commedia all'italiana), the film is considered a key turning point in Alberto Sordi's career.
