Billy Casper is a troubled teenage boy growing up in a poor mining town in Yorkshire. Neglected at home and struggling at school, he is frequently bullied by his classmates and mistreated by his older half-brother Jud. With little hope for his future, Billy finds an unexpected sense of purpose when he discovers a young kestrel that he names Kes.
Billy begins training the bird using a falconry book borrowed from the library, gradually developing a remarkable bond with Kes. Caring for the bird gives him confidence and a rare feeling of control over his own life, while his enthusiasm briefly earns him the attention and respect he has been missing from the adults around him.
Ken Loach’s Kes is a powerful portrait of childhood, poverty, and social disadvantage. Through Billy’s relationship with the bird, the film contrasts the freedom he finds in nature with the harsh limitations imposed by his family, school, and working-class environment. Its naturalistic performances and documentary-like style make Billy’s struggle feel intimate and deeply human.
