In a remote Iranian coastal village, the arrival of a mysterious boat disrupts the community’s quiet existence. The only person aboard is Ayat, a wounded stranger with no memory of how he came there. The villagers take him in and give him a place among them, but his unexplained past gradually becomes a source of suspicion and unease.
Ayat grows close to Rana, a local woman whose husband disappeared at sea. Despite opposition from the community and her deceased husband’s family, Ayat and Rana marry and begin building a life together. Their fragile peace is shattered when mysterious figures begin appearing from the sea, and Ayat becomes convinced that people from his forgotten past are coming to find him.
Bahram Beyzaie’s film transforms this simple mystery into an atmospheric, dreamlike tale about memory, fear, superstition, fate, and the violence that can emerge when an outsider enters a closed community. Its circular structure, ritualistic imagery, and powerful use of the sea and fog give it the quality of an ancient myth rather than a conventional mystery. The film was later restored in 4K by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna.
