Angie is a young British woman who loses her job at a recruitment agency after a confrontation with her manager. Determined to become independent, she decides to start her own employment agency with her friend and former colleague Rose. The two women begin recruiting migrant workers from Eastern Europe, connecting them with low-paid jobs in Britain.
At first, Angie sees the business as an opportunity to build a better life for herself and her young son. But as the agency grows, she becomes increasingly willing to exploit the vulnerable workers she depends on, while dealing with employers who are equally focused on keeping labor costs low. Her ambitions gradually force her to confront the moral consequences of treating people as commodities.
Ken Loach’s It’s a Free World… is a sharp social drama about immigration, exploitation, and the realities of the modern labor market. The film examines how economic insecurity can turn people into both victims and participants in systems of exploitation, while questioning what freedom really means when survival depends on competing with others.
