A nameless protagonist living in southern Italy, who rejects the dominant religious and cultural traditions of his environment-particularly Catholicism and the legacy of martyrdom tied to the region. Set in the town of Otranto, historically associated with the Siege of Otranto and the mass martyrdom of its inhabitants, the film juxtaposes this past with the protagonist’s personal rebellion. He resists the cult of the Virgin Mary and the expectation of spiritual conformity.
