Riff-Raff (1991)

Stevie is a young Scottish construction worker who arrives in London looking for a fresh start after being released from prison. He finds work on a dangerous building site, joining a group of casual laborers who struggle with low wages, poor working conditions, and the constant threat of unemployment. Despite their hardships, the workers develop a strong sense of friendship and solidarity.

Stevie’s life begins to change when he meets Susan, an aspiring singer who is struggling with her own problems. Their relationship offers him a brief sense of stability and hope, but the pressures of poverty, insecure employment, and a lack of opportunities continue to weigh heavily on them.

Ken Loach’s Riff-Raff is a gritty and often darkly humorous portrait of working-class life in Britain during the early 1990s. Through the lives of construction workers facing exploitation and insecurity, the film examines unemployment, poverty, unsafe working conditions, and the erosion of workers’ rights. Its naturalistic performances and sharp social commentary combine humor and realism to create a powerful picture of life on the margins.
