In 1920s Ireland, Damien O’Donovan is packing his bags for a promising new career as a doctor in London when he witnesses British Black and Tan forces beat a friend to death for the crime of speaking Irish Gaelic. The killing shatters his plan to stay out of the growing conflict, and Damien abandons medicine to join his older brother Teddy in the Irish Republican Army’s guerrilla campaign against the ruthless colonial forces sent to crush Ireland’s bid for independence.
As the brothers fight side by side through escalating violence, betrayal, and brutal reprisals, the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty splits the movement itself—Teddy accepting the compromise it offers, Damien rejecting it as a betrayal of everything they fought for. What began as a united rebellion against a common enemy curdles into the Irish Civil War, turning brother against brother in a conflict even more devastating than the one that started it.
Ken Loach’s The Wind That Shakes the Barley won the Palme d’Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, his first, for its unflinching portrait of a revolution that consumes its own. Anchored by a haunting performance from Cillian Murphy, the film refuses easy heroism, choosing instead to sit with the moral cost of armed struggle and the tragedy of ideals that end up turning on themselves.
